Title: Kurz titanium ossicular chain prosthesis: prognostic factors and surgical precautions

Abstract

A wide range of prosthesis has been used for ossicular chain reconstruction in middle-ear surgery, to optimize postoperative functional results. Titanium ossicular prostheses are used in the treatment of conductive hearing loss involving ossicular chain abnormality, due to their good biocompatibility, ease of use, light weight, and adjustable length.
Studies of functional outcome have highlighted the ease of per-operative manipulation, structural stability or a hypothetical advantage in improving speech frequency performance.
In pure tone audiometry, successful functional results (ABG?20 dB) with the Kurz titanium prosthesis range from 57% to 76% according to the authors.
What is the influence of the following prognostic factors on the functional results: type of prosthesis, type of otitis media, primary/staged/revision surgery and ossicle status? And what are the surgical tips and precautions to be considered to optimize the ossicular chain reconstruction?
