Congenital supernumerary nostril with frontal sinus involvement in a 6-month-old infant: First surgically managed case from Bangladesh

Abstract

A supernumerary nostril is one of the rarest of the congenital nasal malformations, and less than 40 cases have been reported worldwide. It could be an isolated defect or associated with craniofacial or systemic abnormalities. We report the 1st case of congenital supernumerary nostril ever recorded and treated surgically in Bangladesh. A 6-month-old male infant was found to have a left accessory nostril draining into the frontal sinus. Thus, a well-planned surgery that included preoperative planning and a total surgical excision resulted in excellent cosmetic and functional outcomes. This case report discusses the diagnostic and surgical issues related to these unusual anomalies, including their embryological background, imaging appearances and surgical techniques.
